Kenniscentrum voor honingbijen, wilde (solitaire) bijen en bestuiving Knowledge centre for honeybees, wild (solitary) bees and pollination
BIN is the planned national knowledge centre for honeybees, wild (solitary) bees, and pollination. We connect science, beekeeping, and agricultural practice to protect bees structurally.
Waarom BINWhy BIN
Unlike Germany, France, and Flanders, the Netherlands has no independent national knowledge centre for pollinators. Knowledge is fragmented, crises are addressed ad hoc, and national monitoring is absent.
BIN consolidates what exists, fills what is missing, and connects scientists, beekeepers, farmers, and policymakers in one independent structure.
Onze aanpakOur approach

An open data hub for bee monitoring, carrying capacity assessment, and AI-driven detection of invasive species such as the Asian hornet.
BIN collaborates with agricultural collectives and the food industry on sustainable placement standards for bees in agricultural landscapes.
Over BINAbout BIN
Bijeninstituut Nederland (BIN) is the planned national knowledge and coordination centre for honeybees, wild (solitary) bees, and pollination. Not a lobby — a neutral hub of science, practice, and policy.
Annual honeybee winter mortality has fluctuated between 10 and 30 percent for years. Of the approximately 360 species of wild bees in the Netherlands, a large proportion is on the Red List. The causes are complex: varroa and viruses, food shortages, pesticides, climate change, and the advance of the Asian hornet.
At the same time, knowledge is fragmented across universities, foundations, beekeepers, and governments. There is no single central place that consolidates knowledge, translates it into policy, and ensures national coordination.
Jaarlijks terugkerend probleem zonder landelijke monitoringstandaard.
A recurring annual problem without a national monitoring standard.
Groot deel op Rode Lijst. Systematische monitoring ontbreekt.
Most on the Red List. Systematic monitoring is absent.
Pollination is indispensable for fruit, seed, and arable farming.
Explosieve opmars sinds 2023, zonder landelijke regie of protocol.
Explosive spread since 2023, without national coordination or protocol.
MissieMission
BIN is designed as an independent knowledge and coordination centre. It connects beekeeping, agriculture, nature, and science. BIN represents no interests — it validates facts, develops protocols, and advises on the basis of evidence.
Drie kerntakenThree core tasks
1. Consolidate and translate knowledge — uniform protocols for bee health and monitoring, national approach to invasive species, clear advice on pollination quality.
2. Connect research — collaborate with universities and universities of applied sciences, set the research agenda based on urgency, collect data in a national data hub.
3. Field coordination — crisis coordination, support for agriculture and nature in ecological management, communication to beekeepers, municipalities, and citizens.
Oprichting bestuur en adviesraden, opstart monitoring bijengezondheid, landelijke aanpak Aziatische hoornaar vormgeven, onderzoeksagenda vaststellen.
Founding board and advisory councils, launching bee health monitoring, shaping national Asian hornet approach, establishing research agenda.
Protocollen landelijk uitrollen, datahub openen, partnerschappen formaliseren, regionale veldteams opzetten.
Rolling out protocols nationally, opening the data hub, formalising partnerships, setting up regional field teams.
Jaarlijkse rapportages bestuiversstatus, structurele financiering vastzetten, nationale coördinatie bestuivingskwaliteit, internationale samenwerking uitbreiden.
Annual pollinator status reports, securing structural funding, national pollination quality coordination, expanding international collaboration.
WerkpijlersWork pillars
Samen dekken zij de volledige keten van bijengezondheid tot bestuivingsecologie, van crisisrespons tot kennisoverdracht.BIN’s work programme is built around five pillars covering the full chain from bee health to pollination ecology, from crisis response to knowledge transfer.
The honeybee faces structural pressure from varroa and viral diseases. BIN works on uniform treatment protocols, national monitoring of varroa pressure and virus prevalence, and strengthening genetic resilience through the Bijenteeltprogramma's programme.
BIN focuses on developing VSH- and SMR-selected bee strains naturally more resistant to varroa. Beekeepers rear queens with proven resistance traits, reducing dependence on chemical treatments and structurally lowering winter mortality.
The data hub annually records winter mortality, varroa pressure, and virus data per region, producing the first reliable national time series independent of voluntary participation.
Too many honeybees in too small an area damages wild bee populations. BIN develops a scientifically grounded Placement Protocol that helps beekeepers, municipalities, and land managers place colonies responsibly.
The Placement Protocol is based on carrying capacity measurements: how much nectar and pollen does an area offer in a given season? BIN deploys eighty integrated biodiversity stations on heathlands and in woodland areas. Each station continuously measures wild bee activity, insect biomass, and bird species via acoustic analysis. Using satellite data, bloom databases, and these field measurements, BIN calculates the ecological space per area.
At the same time, BIN works on systematic monitoring of the 360+ species of wild bees in the Netherlands — in collaboration with farmers and land managers.
The agricultural sector is a concrete implementation partner in the Placement Protocol. Through effectiveness measurement at sites with managed landscape elements — hedgerows, flower strips, herb-rich margins — BIN determines whether these measures actually contribute to wild bee populations. This is currently unavailable anywhere in the Netherlands.
The Netherlands has no central database for bee health. BIN builds the national data hub that structurally tracks winter mortality, varroa pressure, virus prevalence, ecological carrying capacity, and species distribution.
The data hub connects existing sources (existing monitoring systems, beekeeper registrations, satellite data) and fills gaps through structured field measurements. Data is anonymised and processed in accordance with GDPR.
Based on the data, BIN annually publishes a pollinator report, risk maps per region, and policy recommendations. Scientific publications are reviewed by the Scientific Advisory Council.
BIN positions itself as the national coordination point for EU-PoMS, the European pollinator monitoring scheme that EU member states are legally required to implement by December 2026. The Netherlands has not yet organised this.
In addition to honeybee data, the hub includes standardised monitoring of wild bees on agricultural land. By linking agricultural management data to BIN sensor data, a unique picture emerges of the effectiveness of nature-inclusive farming — data currently unavailable anywhere in the Netherlands.
The Asian hornet has spread explosively in the Netherlands since 2023. BIN develops an AI-driven monitoring method for early detection, a national reporting protocol, and a coordinated control strategy.
BIN develops an automated national detection network combining three techniques. An AI camera at the beehive automatically identifies whether a captured hornet is an Asian hornet. Upon positive identification, a lightweight radio transmitter is attached to the hornet. The transmitter — range up to 350 metres — guides via an app directly to the nest. The nest location appears in real time on a national map, visible to removal teams and policymakers.
In addition to nest localisation, BIN works on early spring prevention via queen trapping and an AI system that continuously scans scientific publications for emerging invasive threats — such as the Tropilaelaps mite from Asia and the small hive beetle moving northward from Italy. Every nest and intervention is recorded in the data hub, building the first national time series on the spread and control of the Asian hornet.
Scientific knowledge only reaches practice when it is understandable and accessible. BIN translates research results into practical guides, courses, and communication for all target groups.
BIN builds an open knowledge portal with protocols, guides, and reports. For beekeepers there are practical courses; for farmers advice on pollination management; for policymakers clear reports with facts and recommendations.
Through citizen science projects, volunteers are deployed for monitoring of wild bees, Asian hornet detection, and bloom databases — allowing BIN’s reach to far exceed its professional network.
BIN publishes an annual State of the Bee report: a national overview of bee health, wild bee populations, winter mortality, and the spread of the Asian hornet. Input for government policy and European obligations.
